Is the yield curve inverted?

Spreads between terms of the par curve, in basis points (ours)
Spread, basis points5 October 20263 October 2025
10-year minus 2-year+47+55
10-year minus 3-month+109+10

A negative spread means the shorter term yields more than the longer one: the curve is inverted between those two terms.

How to read the par yield curve

Treasury's par yield curve gives, for each term, the coupon rate at which a new Treasury security would sell at par, fitted each business day from closing bid prices of the most recently auctioned securities. These are Treasury's own published figures, as Treasury publishes them; the changes and spreads in basis points (hundredths of a percentage point) are computed by 500metrics.

What this number cannot tell you

  • These are fitted par yields, not market quotes: the yield of any one outstanding note or bond differs.
  • Treasury publishes one curve a business day, from about the close of trading; this page shows the curve held since 2 January 1990, by day.
  • A gap in a term (the 30-year from 2002 to 2006) means Treasury published no value for it; nothing is filled in.
