Each chip is one month's change from the same month a year earlier. The mark in its middle is zero: a fill to the right of it is a rise and a fill to the left a fall. A longer, brighter fill is a larger change, in five steps up to 17.4 and over. Every chip prints its figure and sign.

What this number cannot tell you
- The values are the Census Bureau's estimates of the value of construction work done in the month, on new buildings and structures and on improvements to existing ones, from a sample survey of owners of projects and from reports of public agencies, so each carries sampling error. It revises earlier months in later releases and each year.
- The values are annual rates: the amount that would be spent in a year at the pace of the month, after the Census Bureau's seasonal adjustment, in dollars of the month and not adjusted for changes in prices.
- Private construction is work for private owners; public construction is work for federal, state and local governments. A type of building is the Census Bureau's grouping of projects by use; the lines of the types do not add up to the total, as the page shows some types only.
- The changes, the ranks and the highest and lowest values are ours, worked out from the values the Census Bureau publishes; a change is in percent.
