Each chip is one month's change from the same month a year earlier. The mark in its middle is zero: a fill to the right of it is a rise and a fill to the left a fall. A longer, brighter fill is a larger change, in five steps up to 51.9 and over. Every chip prints its figure and sign.

Understanding gasoline and diesel prices
Where it stands today
The largest change over a year was Diesel, Gulf Coast (PADD 3), up 76.1%, in September 2026.
What do the lines of this page measure?
The Energy Information Administration (EIA) of the US Department of Energy collects the price of gasoline and of on-highway diesel at the pump from samples of gas stations and truck stops every Monday and publishes it that week. Each price is the cash price of a gallon with all taxes, in dollars, for self-service where a station offers it.

This page shows the United States by fuel (all grades, regular, midgrade and premium gasoline, and diesel) and, for regular gasoline and for diesel, the five regions EIA calls Petroleum Administration for Defense Districts (PADD): East Coast (PADD 1), Midwest (PADD 2), Gulf Coast (PADD 3), Rocky Mountain (PADD 4) and West Coast (PADD 5), and the West Coast without California.
What 500metrics adds: the average of the weekly prices of each month; the change over a year of every line, ranked across the page; the last ten years of every line as rows of small charts; and a table of the change over a year in each of the last twelve months. Lines with a link have a page of their own with the history since the series begins.

What do these figures leave out, and how are they cited?Limits, dates and how to cite
What this number cannot tell you
- EIA publishes prices for some states and cities too. This page shows the United States and the regions only.
- EIA asks stations for their price on Monday of each week. Each line is the simple average of the weekly prices of a calendar month, as EIA works out its own monthly averages. A month counts once it has ended, and only when every Monday of it has a price, so the newest month is the last full month and a month with a week missing shows as a gap in the chart.
- It is a price at the pump, not the price of crude oil or of gasoline on any market. EIA changed the way it estimates the weekly gasoline price in May 2018 and the weekly diesel price in June 2022, and the price for the week of each change is not directly comparable with the week before.
- The averages, the changes and the ranks are ours, worked out from the weekly prices EIA publishes; a change is in percent.
