What do the lines of this page measure?

The Federal Reserve Board's Financial Accounts of the United States (Z.1) set out, for households and nonprofit organizations together, what they own and what they owe at the end of each quarter. This page shows the totals (net worth, total assets and total liabilities), the main kinds of asset and the two largest debts.

Real estate and corporate equities are at market value. Pension entitlements are the claims households have on pension funds and on employers' plans. Home mortgages are the one-to-four-family mortgages that households owe; consumer credit is credit cards, car loans, student loans and the like.

What 500metrics adds: the change over a year of every line, ranked across the page; the last ten years of every line as rows of small charts; and a table of the change over a year in each of the last eight quarters. Net worth has a page of its own with the history since 1945.

What this number cannot tell you

  • The lines are the Board's estimates. Several are measured at market value, so they move with prices, and the Board revises past quarters in later releases.
  • Some lines are parts of others: real estate, financial assets, corporate equities and pension entitlements are parts of total assets, and the two debts are parts of total liabilities. Corporate equities here are the shares households hold directly; the shares they hold through mutual funds are in financial assets, and through pension funds in pension entitlements.
  • Nonprofit organizations are in every line; the Board's quarterly tables do not show households alone.
  • The changes and the ranks are ours, worked out from the values the Board publishes; a change is in percent.
