Terms of use

Updated .

Text on this page was drafted with AI tools; every figure is computed by code from the cited official source.

These terms apply to everyone who reads, quotes, reuses or fetches anything from the home page. The site is published by 500metrics ("we", "us"). By using the site you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the site.

1. What the site is

500metrics is a free reference site that publishes dated numbers about US government finance, calculated from official public data. It needs no account and collects no payment. What it is not is set out at Disclaimer, which forms part of these terms.

2. Reusing our numbers

Our own work is the numbers we calculate, the tables we compile and the charts we draw from official data. You may copy, share and adapt it, for any purpose including commercial use, under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International licence (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/), as set out at the licence page. The credit we ask for is "500metrics" with a link to the page you used; How to cite 500metrics shows how to cite a single number.

The data we start from belongs to its publishers and keeps their terms:

  • U.S. Treasury and the Bureau of the Fiscal Service. Data from Fiscal Data and other Treasury sources is a work of the US government. The Fiscal Service asks to be credited ("Source: U.S. Treasury, Bureau of the Fiscal Service, Fiscal Data") and does not allow its name to be used to suggest that it endorses any product or service.
  • Federal Reserve Bank of New York. New York Fed data on our pages is passed through under the New York Fed's Terms of Use (https://www.newyorkfed.org/privacy/termsofuse), with the same permissions, conditions and restrictions. Nothing in these terms adds a restriction to it. The New York Fed does not permit the use of its name in advertising or as an endorsement.
  • Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System and the Congressional Budget Office. Their data is in the public domain; both ask to be cited as the source.

Sources lists every source we use, with its licence, the notices its publisher requires and the date we last checked its terms.

The 500metrics name and word mark, the design of the site, and the explanatory text on its pages are not covered by the Creative Commons licence. You may quote short passages of our text with a link, as is usual in reporting and research. Please do not use our name or design in a way that suggests we endorse you, your product or your service.

3. Fetching pages and data by software

Search engines, archives, researchers and AI services may fetch our pages. Please respect Robots.txt, identify your software honestly in its user agent, and keep your request rate low enough that it does not slow the site for other readers. Do not try to get around any limit we set, and do not present our pages as your own or strip their source lines and dates. We may block traffic that harms the site or ignores these rules.

4. Not advice

Nothing on the site is investment, financial, tax or legal advice, or an offer of any security. The site is the same for every reader and does not take anyone's circumstances into account. Any decision you make is yours. See Disclaimer.

5. No warranty

We work hard to publish accurate numbers on time, we check them against official totals, and we correct errors in the open at Corrections. Even so, the site and everything on it are provided "as is" and "as available". To the fullest extent the law allows, we make no promise that the site will be accurate, complete, current or always available, and we disclaim all implied warranties, including fitness for a particular purpose.

6. Limits of liability

To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for any loss or damage arising from your use of the site or your reliance on anything on it, including any loss from investment or trading decisions, lost profits, or indirect or consequential loss. Where the law does not allow us to exclude liability, our total liability to you is limited to 100 US dollars.

Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law, such as liability for fraud, or removes any right you have as a consumer under the law of the country where you live.

We link to the official sources of our data and to other pages that help explain it. We are not responsible for the content or availability of other sites, and a link is not an endorsement.

8. Changes

We may change these terms. Each version carries its date at the top of this page, and a change applies from the date it is published here. A change never applies to use of the site that happened before it.

9. Your rights as a consumer

Nothing in these terms takes away any mandatory protection the law of your own country gives you as a consumer.
