What do the lines of this page measure?

The Federal Reserve Board's H.8 release estimates the balance sheet of all commercial banks in the United States each week. This page shows the larger lines of it. On the assets side: bank credit, which is the securities plus the loans and leases that the banks hold, the cash assets, and the federal funds the banks have sold and the securities they hold under agreements to resell. On the liabilities side: the deposits, the borrowings and the other liabilities.

Each value is the average of the Board's weekly levels, as of each Wednesday, over the month, seasonally adjusted, for all commercial banks together: the domestically chartered banks and the foreign-related institutions in the United States. The loans and leases have a page by type, and the deposits have a page of their own.

What 500metrics adds: the change over a year of every line, ranked across the page; the last ten years of every line as rows of small charts; and a table of the change over a year in each of the last twelve months.

What do these figures leave out, and how are they cited?Limits, dates and how to cite

What this number cannot tell you

  • The values are the Board's estimates. They rest on a weekly report from a panel of about 850 banks, which hold around 90 percent of commercial bank assets, and on the quarterly reports that all banks file. The Board revises past weeks and months, and the seasonal adjustment, in later releases; this page always shows the newest release.
  • The lines overlap and are not all of the balance sheet. Bank credit includes the securities and the loans and leases, the securities include the Treasury and agency securities and the other securities, and the deposits include the large time deposits and the other deposits. Total assets also include the other assets and the loans to commercial banks, less the allowance for credit losses, which this page does not show.
  • The levels are not adjusted for breaks. When a bank is bought, a portfolio is sold or items are reclassified, a level can jump without any new business, and the change over a year includes the jump. The Board's own growth rates are adjusted for such breaks and are not on this page.
  • The data cover the domestic offices of commercial banks and the US offices of foreign-related institutions. Foreign offices, thrifts, savings institutions, credit unions and finance companies are not in them.
  • The changes and the ranks are ours, worked out from the values the Board publishes; a change is in percent.
