Each bar is the change in one line over a year, the largest first, with its rank at the left and its newest value under the figure. A line with its own page links it from its name. A change below zero runs to the left of the zero line. The colour says which section of the page a line is in.

Each chip is one quarter's change from the same quarter a year earlier. The mark in its middle is zero: a fill to the right of it is a rise and a fill to the left a fall. A longer, brighter fill is a larger change, in five steps up to 0.9 and over. Every chip prints its figure and sign.

Understanding net worth by wealth group
Where it stands today
The largest change over a year was Top 0.1%, up 0.9 percentage points, in the second quarter of 2026.
What do the lines of this page measure?
The Federal Reserve Board's Distributional Financial Accounts (DFA) split the household balance sheet of the Financial Accounts of the United States (Z.1) among groups of households ranked by net worth. This page shows the share of all net worth that each group holds: the top 0.1 percent, the next 0.9 percent, the next 9 percent, the next 40 percent and the bottom 50 percent of households.

Net worth is what households own, such as homes, deposits, shares, pension claims and businesses, less what they owe, such as mortgages and consumer credit. The Board builds the DFA from the Z.1's totals and the Survey of Consumer Finances, which asks households what they own and owe. The five groups together are all households, so the shares of a quarter add to 100 percent, give or take rounding.
What 500metrics adds: the change over a year of every group's share, in percentage points, ranked across the page; the last ten years of every group as rows of small charts; and a table of the change over a year in each of the last eight quarters.

What do these figures leave out, and how are they cited?Limits, dates and how to cite
What this number cannot tell you
- The DFA are estimates. The Survey of Consumer Finances is taken every three years, so the Board estimates the quarters between surveys, and recent figures can change when a new survey arrives.
- Households are ranked by net worth, not by income. The groups are groups of households of different numbers: the top 0.1 percent is far fewer households than the bottom 50 percent.
- The shares are shares of the net worth of the household sector as the DFA count it. They say how wealth is divided, not how much any household has.
- The Board prints each share to one decimal place.
- The Board revises past quarters in later releases; this page always shows the newest release.
- The changes and the ranks are ours, worked out from the values the Board publishes; a change is in percentage points.
