Each chip is one month's change from the same month a year earlier. The mark in its middle is zero: a fill to the right of it is a rise and a fill to the left a fall. A longer, brighter fill is a larger change, in five steps up to 11.7 and over. Every chip prints its figure and sign.

Understanding dollar exchange rates

Where it stands today

The largest change over a year was Sri Lankan rupee, up 9.1%, in September 2026.

What do the lines of this page measure?

These are the exchange rates of the US dollar against the currencies that the Federal Reserve Board (the Board) lists in its H.10 release and quotes as the amount of the currency for one US dollar, but for the Venezuelan bolivar, which this page leaves out. The Board publishes the daily rates in its H.10 release and their monthly averages in its G.5 release. The daily rates are noon buying rates in New York for cable transfers payable in the listed currencies, certified by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York for customs purposes.

The euro, the British pound, the Australian dollar and the New Zealand dollar are quoted the other way, as US dollars for one unit, and are on the exchange rates in dollars page.

What 500metrics adds: the change over a year of every currency, ranked across the page; the last ten years of every currency as rows of small charts; and a table of the change over a year in each of the last twelve months. Each currency has a page of its own with the history since the series begins.

What do these figures leave out, and how are they cited?Limits, dates and how to cite

What this number cannot tell you

  • These are the Board's own rates, certified for customs purposes. They are not prices from an exchange, a bank or a dealer.
  • A month's value is the monthly average of the daily rates that the Board's G.5 release publishes. The Board prints the rates to four decimal places, and this page prints them as published.
  • Each rate is the amount of the currency for one US dollar, so a higher number is more of that currency for one dollar. The currencies are in different units, so only the changes, not the values, are comparable across the page.
  • The changes and the ranks are ours, worked out from the values the Board publishes; a change is in percent.
