What do the lines of this page measure?

The Federal Reserve Board's Financial Accounts of the United States (Z.1) add up, for each kind of financial institution, the financial assets it holds at the end of each quarter: loans, securities, deposits and the like. This page shows banks and other lenders, money market funds, mutual funds, exchange-traded funds, pension funds, insurers, the government-sponsored enterprises and the central bank (the Federal Reserve).

The government-sponsored enterprises include Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, the Federal Home Loan Banks and the farm credit system. Pension funds are private plans and the plans of the federal, state and local governments.

What 500metrics adds: the change over a year of every kind of institution, ranked across the page; the last ten years of every kind as rows of small charts; and a table of the change over a year in each of the last eight quarters.

What do these figures leave out, and how are they cited?Limits, dates and how to cite

What this number cannot tell you

  • The assets of one institution are often the liabilities of another, so the lines are not added together and are not a measure of the total size of finance.
  • Several lines are at market value, so they move with prices.
  • Total financial assets leave out buildings and equipment. Private depository institutions are commercial banks, credit unions and similar firms.
  • The Board revises past quarters in later releases; this page always shows the newest release.
  • The changes and the ranks are ours, worked out from the values the Board publishes; a change is in percent.
