Where these numbers come from

Treasury's TIC system reports holdings of US Treasury bills, notes and bonds by foreign residents at the end of each month, by the country where the holder or its custodian is located. Treasury publishes a month's figures in the middle of the second month after it, and revises earlier months each year after its annual survey. This page shows the countries Treasury's latest table lists; the rest are in "All other".

What this number cannot tell you
  • Holdings are attributed to the country of the holder or of its custodian: securities held in custody in Belgium, Luxembourg or the Cayman Islands may belong to residents of other countries.
  • Figures from 31 March 2000 on, as Treasury publishes them now.
