Understanding the personal saving rate

Where it stands today

The personal saving rate was 3.8% in September 2026.

What does the personal saving rate measure?

The personal saving rate is personal saving as a percentage of disposable personal income. The Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) publishes it each month with personal income and outlays, about four weeks after the month ends.

Disposable personal income is personal income less personal current taxes. Personal saving is what is left of it after personal outlays: spending on goods and services, interest payments and transfer payments. The personal sector in BEA's accounts is households and the nonprofit institutions that serve them.

What 500metrics adds: the change over a year and over five years in percentage points, the highest and lowest value since the series begins, and the last month that was higher or lower.

What this number cannot tell you

  • BEA revises each month in the releases that follow and revises past years in its annual updates. This page shows the newest estimate of every month, so an earlier month can differ from the figure first published.
  • Saving is a remainder: BEA works out income and outlays from separate sources and takes the difference, so a revision to either moves the rate, and a small revision to a large income can move a rate of a few percent by a visible amount.
  • The changes and the ranks are ours, worked out from the values BEA publishes; a change is in percentage points.
  • This product uses the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) Data API but is not endorsed or certified by BEA.
