Understanding pce prices by type
Where it stands today
The largest change over a year was Energy, up 21.3%, in September 2026.
What do the lines of this page measure?
The price index for personal consumption expenditures (PCE) measures the average change in the prices paid for the goods and services that people in the United States consume, including those bought on their behalf. The Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) publishes it each month with personal income and outlays, for all PCE and for each major type of product. The headline index and the index excluding food and energy have a page each.

This page sets the indexes side by side: goods, with durable goods (such as cars and furniture) and nondurable goods (such as food and clothing); services; food and beverages bought for use at home; energy goods and services; and housing and utilities. Each index is set to 100 in BEA's reference year, so the levels of two indexes are not comparable; their changes are.
What 500metrics adds: the change over a year of every index, ranked across the page; the last ten years of every index as rows of small charts; and a table of the change over a year in each of the last twelve months.

What do these figures leave out, and how are they cited?Limits, dates and how to cite
What this number cannot tell you
- BEA revises each month in the releases that follow and revises past years in its annual updates. This page shows the newest estimate of every month, so an earlier month can differ from the figure first published.
- The indexes are chain-type and seasonally adjusted. They are not parts of one another that add up: the index for all PCE is a weighted combination of the types, and BEA's tables show finer types than the ones on this page.
- Energy goods and services are gasoline and other energy goods, and electricity and gas. Housing and utilities include rent, the rent that owners are counted as paying themselves, and household utilities, so electricity and gas are in both indexes.
- The changes and the ranks are ours, worked out from the values BEA publishes; a change is in percent.
- This product uses the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) Data API but is not endorsed or certified by BEA.
