Understanding customs duties

Where it stands today

Customs duties collected were $23.38B in August 2026, refunds $10.54B.

What does the customs duties line count?

Customs duties are taxes on goods imported into the United States. The Monthly Treasury Statement lists them as one line of the government's receipts and gives, for each month, the duties collected, the refunds paid out of them and the net, which is collected less refunded. Treasury publishes the statement each month for the month before.

The statement reports refunds as one figure and does not give a reason for them. Treasury can restate a month in a later statement; this page shows each month as the statement currently gives it.

What 500metrics adds: each fiscal year's sums, which run from October to September, the largest refunds of any month, the last month duties collected were higher, and how many months had net receipts below zero.

Where do these figures come from?Limits, source and how to cite

What this number cannot tell you

  • Our collector holds the line from March 2015; the statement's earlier months are not in this page.
  • Treasury reports collected, refunded and net as separate figures and does not say which duties a refund repaid or when they were paid.
  • Net receipts are the published net, which can be below zero in a month whose refunds exceed its collections.
  • A fiscal year here is the sum of the months this page holds, not Treasury's own fiscal-year total.
