Consumer Price Index (CPI-U) · inflation calculator
Inflation calculator: what was an amount worth in another month?
$100.00 in January 2000 buys what $199.61 buys in September 2026 (CPI-U, published by the Bureau of Labor Statistics on ).
Worked example
$100.00 in January 2000 buys what $199.61 buys in September 2026.
100.00 × 336.940 ÷ 168.8 = 199.61, where 336.940 is the index of September 2026 and 168.8 the index of January 2000.
Prices rose 99.6 percent from January 2000 to September 2026.
The sumOurs
An amount in a later month's dollars is the amount times that month's index, divided by the index of the month it starts in.
The example above: 100.00 × 336.940 ÷ 168.8 = 199.61, rounded to the cent.
The indexBureau of Labor Statistics
The index is the consumer price index for all urban consumers (CPI-U), all items, U.S. city average, not seasonally adjusted. It starts in January 1913; the newest month is September 2026.
Months with no index
The Bureau collected no prices in October 2025, so that month has no index and the calculator gives no figure for it.
Whole yearsOurs
To compare whole years, the value of a dollar by year takes each year at the annual average of its months.
Understanding the inflation calculator
Where it stands today
$100.00 in January 2000 buys what $199.61 buys in September 2026.
What does the calculator show?
A dollar buys less when prices rise. The Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes the consumer price index for all urban consumers (CPI-U), all items, U.S. city average, not seasonally adjusted each month, and the calculator turns an amount of one month into the dollars of another by the ratio of their index values.

Any month from January 1913 to September 2026 can be the start or the end. An earlier end month gives a smaller amount: the same sum run backward.
The result and the change in prices are our arithmetic on the Bureau's index values, in whole numbers, so the sum is exact before it is rounded to the cent.

What does the calculator leave out, and where are the figures from?Limits and source
Source: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U), all items, U.S. city average, not seasonally adjusted, series CUUR0000SA0.
What this number cannot tell you
- The index is the consumer price index for all urban consumers (CPI-U), all items, U.S. city average, not seasonally adjusted. It follows what a basket of goods and services bought in cities costs; it is not a record of what any one household paid for any one thing.
- A result is the amount times one month's index divided by another's, rounded to the cent. The change in prices is the same ratio in percent, to one decimal. Both are our arithmetic on the Bureau's index values; the Bureau does not publish or endorse them.
- The Bureau prints its index to one decimal for the early years and to three for the later ones. The sums use the digits as printed.
- The index is not seasonally adjusted, so two months of different seasons carry the season's pattern as well as the change in prices. The newest month is September 2026; later months have no value yet.
- The Bureau collected no prices in October 2025, so it has no index for that month and the calculator gives no figure for it.
