Each chip is one month's change from the same month a year earlier. The mark in its middle is zero: a fill to the right of it is a rise and a fill to the left a fall. A longer, brighter fill is a larger change, in five steps up to 2.000 and over. Every chip prints its figure and sign. A dash is a month with no figure.

Understanding central bank rates

Where it stands today

The largest change over a year was Colombia, up 2.750 percentage points, in September 2026.

What do the lines of this page measure?

A policy rate is the main interest rate a central bank sets to steer the short-term interest rates of its economy. The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) collects the policy rates of central banks and publishes, for each economy, the rate in force at the end of each month. This page shows the economies whose central bank has a current rate in the BIS data. Which rate counts as the policy rate differs by bank (a target for an overnight rate, a deposit rate, a repo rate), and the page of each economy says which.

What do these figures leave out, and how are they cited?Limits, dates and how to cite

What this number cannot tell you

  • The BIS takes most of its policy rate series from the central banks as national data. A month's value is the rate in force at the end of the month, so a rate that is changed and changed back inside one month does not show.
  • Banks define their policy rate in different ways, so the levels of two economies are not strictly comparable. Each rate is the bank's own, in its own currency, and is not adjusted for inflation.
  • Where a bank states a range for its rate, the BIS series holds the middle of it. The BIS also holds series that stopped; this page does not show them.
  • The changes and the ranks are ours, worked out from the values the BIS publishes; a change is in percentage points.
