Understanding net investment position

Where it stands today

The largest change over a year was US direct investment abroad, up 21.9%, in the second quarter of 2026.

What do the lines of this page measure?

The international investment position is a balance sheet of the United States against the rest of the world at the end of each quarter. The Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) adds up the foreign financial assets that US residents own (US assets) and the US financial assets that foreign residents own (US liabilities). The difference is the net international investment position, which is negative when the liabilities are the larger.

Direct investment is ownership of 10 percent or more of the voting power of a business in another country. US direct investment abroad is a US asset, and foreign direct investment in the United States is a US liability. The rest of the assets and liabilities are holdings of stocks and bonds, loans and deposits, and, among the assets, reserve assets.

What do these figures leave out, and how are they cited?Limits, dates and how to cite

What this number cannot tell you

  • BEA publishes a quarter about three months after it ends, and revises past quarters in later releases and in an annual update. This page shows the newest estimate of every quarter, so an earlier quarter can differ from the figure first published.
  • Each value is a position at the end of a quarter, not a flow. A position changes from one quarter to the next with new financial transactions, with the prices of what is held, with exchange rates and for other reasons; this page shows the level and not the reasons.
  • BEA values direct investment at market value. The direct investment lines are parts of the assets and of the liabilities, not additions to them, and the net position is the assets less the liabilities.
  • A percent change is not shown where the value a year earlier was zero or below, as a percent of such a number is not defined; the net position, which is negative, shows none.
  • The changes and the ranks are ours, worked out from the values BEA publishes; a change is in percent.
  • This product uses the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) Data API but is not endorsed or certified by BEA.
