What does the gold report count?

The Treasury publishes a monthly Status Report of U.S. Government Gold Reserve that lists the gold it owns line by line: who holds it, in what form and where, in fine troy ounces, with a book value in dollars for each line. Most of the gold is held by the US Mint in deep storage at Fort Knox, West Point and Denver; some is held at the Federal Reserve Banks.

Book value is the statutory price of $42.22 an ounce (31 U.S.C. 5117) times the fine troy ounces, an accounting figure; the report gives no market value, and neither does this page. The metric tons are our conversion of the published ounces.
