Understanding the value of a dollar by year
Where it stands today
One dollar in 1913 buys what $34.03 buys in September 2026.
What does this table show?
A dollar buys less when prices rise. The Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes the consumer price index for all urban consumers (CPI-U), all items, U.S. city average, not seasonally adjusted each month. This table takes each year at the annual average of the index and shows what one dollar of that year buys in the newest month.
For each year the table gives the annual average index, the value of one dollar of that year in September 2026 and the yearly rate, the change of the average from the year before. Each year has a page with the same sum, ten-year steps and the years either side.
One dollar of a year times the index of September 2026, 336.940, divided by the annual average index of that year is its value in September 2026.

What this number cannot tell you
- The index is the consumer price index for all urban consumers (CPI-U), all items, U.S. city average, not seasonally adjusted. It follows what a basket of goods and services bought in cities costs; it is not a record of what any one household paid for any one thing.
- A year is taken at the annual average of its monthly indexes. One dollar of September 2026 is that month's index alone, so the values in the table move when the Bureau publishes a new month.
- The value of a dollar and the yearly rate are our arithmetic on the Bureau's index values. The Bureau does not publish or endorse them.
