What do these figures leave out, and how are they cited?Limits, dates and how to cite

What this number cannot tell you

  • The values come from the Census Bureau's Survey of Construction, a sample of new houses, so each carries sampling error, which can be large for a month and for a region; the Census Bureau publishes its size. It revises earlier months in later releases, and by a large amount at times.
  • A sale is counted when a contract is signed or a deposit is accepted, not when the buyer moves in. The figures are for new single-family houses and leave out resales.
  • The values are annual rates: the number of houses that would be sold in a year at the pace of the month, after the Census Bureau's seasonal adjustment.
  • The changes, the ranks and the highest and lowest values are ours, worked out from the values the Census Bureau publishes; a change is in percent.
