Each chip is one month's change from the same month a year earlier. The mark in its middle is zero: a fill to the right of it is a rise and a fill to the left a fall. A longer, brighter fill is a larger change, in five steps up to 8.0 and over. Every chip prints its figure and sign.

What do the lines of this page measure?

The Federal Reserve Board's H.8 release estimates the balance sheet of all commercial banks in the United States each week. This page shows the loans and leases that the banks hold, in total and by type: loans to businesses, real estate loans, consumer loans and all other loans and leases. The real estate loans are split into residential and commercial, and the consumer loans into credit cards and other revolving plans, automobile loans and all other consumer loans.

Each value is the average of the Board's weekly levels, as of each Wednesday, over the month, seasonally adjusted, for all commercial banks together: the domestically chartered banks and the foreign-related institutions in the United States. A loan counts when it is on the books of a bank, before the allowance for credit losses that the Board takes off separately.

What 500metrics adds: the change over a year of every line, ranked across the page; the last ten years of every line as rows of small charts; and a table of the change over a year in each of the last twelve months.

What do these figures leave out, and how are they cited?Limits, dates and how to cite

What this number cannot tell you

  • The values are the Board's estimates. They rest on a weekly report from a panel of about 850 banks, which hold around 90 percent of commercial bank assets, and on the quarterly reports that all banks file. The Board revises past weeks and months, and the seasonal adjustment, in later releases; this page always shows the newest release.
  • The lines overlap and do not add up: loans and leases include every type below them, real estate loans include the residential and commercial lines, and those include the parts shown under them.
  • The levels are not adjusted for breaks. When a bank is bought, a portfolio is sold or loans are reclassified, a level can jump without any new lending, and the change over a year includes the jump. The Board's own growth rates are adjusted for such breaks and are not on this page.
  • The Board began some lines later: residential and commercial real estate loans in June 2004, the parts of commercial real estate and the automobile and all other consumer loans in January 2015. The credit card line begins in July 2000.
  • The data cover the domestic offices of commercial banks and the US offices of foreign-related institutions. Foreign offices, thrifts, savings institutions, credit unions and finance companies are not in them.
  • The changes and the ranks are ours, worked out from the values the Board publishes; a change is in percent.
