Each chip is one quarter's change from the same quarter a year earlier. The mark in its middle is zero: a fill to the right of it is a rise and a fill to the left a fall. A longer, brighter fill is a larger change, in five steps up to 0.25 and over. Every chip prints its figure and sign.

Understanding bank delinquency rates

Where it stands today

The largest change over a year was Residential real estate loans, up 0.08 percentage points, in the second quarter of 2026.

What do the lines of this page measure?

The Federal Reserve Board publishes, each quarter, the delinquency rates of commercial banks by type of loan. Delinquent loans and leases are those past due thirty days or more and still accruing interest, plus those in nonaccrual status. A delinquency rate is the share of the loans of that type that are delinquent at the end of the quarter.

This page shows the rates for all commercial banks together, seasonally adjusted: all loans, commercial and industrial loans, real estate loans and their residential and commercial parts, and consumer loans with the credit card loans and the other consumer loans. The release has no separate line for automobile loans, which are inside the other consumer loans. The credit card loans have a page of their own.

What 500metrics adds: the change over a year of every line in percentage points, ranked across the page; the last ten years of every line as rows of small charts; and a table of the change over a year in each of the last eight quarters.

What do these figures leave out, and how are they cited?Limits, dates and how to cite

What this number cannot tell you

  • The rates rest on the reports that commercial banks file with their regulators each quarter. The Board revises past quarters in later releases; this page always shows the newest release.
  • A rate is a share of its own type of loan, so the lines are not parts of one another's total and cannot be added.
  • The residential and commercial real estate lines count loans booked in domestic offices only; the other lines count all of the banks' loans of the type.
  • The release has more lines than this page shows: agricultural loans, farmland loans and leases, and the rates for the 100 largest banks and for the other banks, with the amounts the rates are worked out from.
  • The Board prints each rate to two decimal places, and some lines begin later than others: the residential and commercial real estate lines and the credit card and other consumer loans in 1991, the others in 1985 or 1987.
  • The changes and the ranks are ours, worked out from the values the Board publishes; a change is in percentage points.
