Understanding treasury deposits

Where it stands today

The largest change over a year was Corporate income taxes, up 47.7%, in September 2026.

What do the lines of this page measure?

The Daily Treasury Statement is the Treasury's daily account of the cash that goes into and out of its main bank account, the Treasury General Account at the Federal Reserve. Its Table II lists the deposits by category. This page shows the largest categories: for each month, the table's own month-to-date amount on the month's last statement day.

Four lines are taxes and duties: income and employment taxes that employers withhold from pay (with the Social Security and Medicare contributions sent in with them), income and self-employment taxes that were not withheld, corporate income taxes, and customs duties with certain excise taxes. The fifth line is cash from the sale of Treasury securities, which is borrowing and not revenue.

What 500metrics adds: the change over a year of every line, ranked across the page; the last ten years of every line as rows of small charts; and a table of the change over a year in each of the last twelve months. The fiscal year so far for the largest lines has a page of its own.

What this number cannot tell you

  • The page shows five categories, not all the statement lists: it has many more deposit lines, from the farm programs to the Postal Service, and the sum of the lines here is not the total of deposits.
  • Each line begins in a different month. Income and employment taxes not withheld, customs duties and the sales of securities begin in October 2005, the first month the statement is held. The lines of withheld income and employment taxes and of corporate income taxes begin in February 2023: before the statement's format of 14 February 2023 these taxes were listed in another table, which this page does not read.
  • The Treasury has renamed these categories, and each line joins the old and the new name: the customs line joins the three names the statement has given it (customs and certain excise taxes, the same under the Department of Homeland Security, and customs duties, taxes and fees), and the sales of securities line joins the two spellings of the table's name (Table III-B and Table IIIB). When a category is renamed inside a month, the line takes the month's total from the table's own month-to-date column: either the new name carries the old name's total, or its column starts afresh and the line adds the old name's amount on its last day to the new name's.
  • The statement counts cash when it reaches the account, not when a tax is owed, so a month with a due date holds more than the one before it. Deposits are not the federal budget's receipts, which count some items differently, and the table's month-to-date amount can differ from the sum of its days when the Treasury corrects a figure.
  • A month is shown once the statement of a later month is held, so the month in progress is not on this page. The changes and the ranks are ours, worked out from the values the Treasury publishes; a change is in percent.
