Understanding i bond rates

Where it stands today

The largest change over a year was Composite rate, up 1.48 percentage points, in November 2026.

What do the lines of this page measure?

A Series I savings bond earns a composite rate made of two parts, a fixed rate and an inflation rate. Treasury announces both on 1 May and 1 November, and they hold for the bonds issued in the six months that follow. The fixed rate stays with a bond for as long as it earns interest. The inflation rate is worked out from the change in the Consumer Price Index for all urban consumers (CPI-U), all items, not seasonally adjusted: the rate announced in November uses the change from March to September, and the rate announced in May the change from September to March.

The composite rate is the fixed rate, plus twice the inflation rate for six months, plus the fixed rate times the inflation rate for six months. It is an annual rate, and Treasury sets it to zero when the formula gives less. Fiscal Data's table begins in September 1998. This page shows the last ten years of it, for each month the rate a bond issued in that month starts on.

What 500metrics adds: the change over a year of each line in percentage points, ranked across the page; the last ten years of each line as rows of small charts; and a table of the change over a year in each of the last twelve months.

What this number cannot tell you

  • A new rate takes effect on 1 May or 1 November. Fiscal Data adds it to its table about a business day later, and until then this page shows the months before it. The page shows only the months that have begun.
  • The composite rate is a rate for a year. Treasury prints the inflation rate for six months, so it is on a different scale from the other two lines; the composite rate counts it twice.
  • The lines are the rates a bond starts on. A bond keeps its fixed rate, but its inflation rate changes every six months from the month it was issued, which is not always 1 May or 1 November; the rates of older bonds are in Fiscal Data's table and are not on this page.
  • The inflation rate is negative when prices fell over the six months. The composite rate is then lower, and never below zero.
  • The page covers Series I bonds only. Fiscal Data has no table of the rate of Series EE bonds.
  • The changes and the ranks are ours, worked out from the rates Treasury publishes; a change is in percentage points.
