Each chip is one month's change from the same month a year earlier. The mark in its middle is zero: a fill to the right of it is a rise and a fill to the left a fall. A longer, brighter fill is a larger change, in five steps up to 89.3 and over. Every chip prints its figure and sign.

Understanding paper savings bonds
Where it stands today
The largest change over a year was Series EE redeemed, up 0.8%, in September 2026.
What do the lines of this page measure?
The Treasury counts the paper savings bonds it has issued and redeemed since each series began, and the ones still outstanding. A piece is one paper bond, whatever its face value. Bonds held in TreasuryDirect accounts are not in this table, so these counts are not a count of all savings bonds. This page shows the counts at the end of each month for all series together and for Series I, Series EE and Series E, and the outstanding bonds of three smaller older series: Series HH, savings notes and Series H.

Outstanding is what Treasury counts as issued and not redeemed. The Treasury's table begins in September 1998; this page shows the last ten years. Series E, HH, H and the savings notes are older series that Treasury no longer issues.
What 500metrics adds: the change over a year of each line in percent, ranked across the page; the last ten years of each line as rows of small charts; and a table of the change over a year in each of the last twelve months. The line for all series is the sum of all the series in Treasury's table and is ours.

What do these figures leave out, and how are they cited?Limits, dates and how to cite
What this number cannot tell you
- The counts are of paper bonds. Bonds held in TreasuryDirect accounts are not counted, so the issued and outstanding counts of Series I and Series EE are counts of paper bonds only. A flat line has no new paper bonds in it; the bonds sold today are not in the table.
- A piece is a bond, not a dollar: a bond of any face value counts once. The debt by security type page shows the dollars of savings bonds as one type of Treasury debt, a different measure.
- Issued less redeemed does not always equal outstanding; the counts are shown as Treasury publishes them.
- The table has more series than this page shows. The smaller older ones that are not shown are in the line for all series.
- Treasury's table prints one month in spring 2026 with the issued, redeemed and outstanding counts of every series at about twice their usual size, and the month after at their usual size again. They are shown as published, so each line has a spike in that month, and the change over a year is off for the months that compare with it.
- The changes and the ranks are ours, worked out from the counts Treasury publishes; a change is in percent. A total since a series began changes little for a series no longer on sale.
