Understanding the ranking

Where it stands today

El Centro, CA had the highest rate, 20.8%, in September 2026.

How is the ranking made?

This page ranks the metropolitan areas of the 50 states and the District of Columbia by their unemployment rate in the newest month the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) has published. A metro area is a city and the counties around it that are closely tied to it, for example by the trips people make to work. BLS estimates the rate of each area every month in its Local Area Unemployment Statistics.

Each metro area has a page of its own with its labor force, its unemployed and employed people, the change over a year, and the highest and lowest value since our record begins. The rates are not seasonally adjusted, so each is set beside the same month a year before.

What 500metrics adds: the rank of every metro area by its rate, the change over a year in percentage points and the labor force beside each rate.

What does the ranking leave out, and where is it from?Limits and source

What this number cannot tell you

  • The rates of a metro area are estimates from a model, not a count. BLS revises the latest months as more data arrive and revises the past years every March.
  • The rate is a share of the labor force of its own area, so an area with a small labor force can move more from one month to the next than a large one.
  • The rates are not seasonally adjusted. The rate for the United States on this page is the household survey's, also not seasonally adjusted; the seasonally adjusted rate of the nation is on the unemployment rate page.
  • The metro areas of Puerto Rico are not on this page, as the state pages do not cover it. A metro area can cross state lines: the states listed are those in BLS's name for the area.
  • The ranks and the changes are ours, worked out from the values BLS publishes. Equal rates share a rank.
