Each chip is one month's change from the same month a year earlier. The mark in its middle is zero: a fill to the right of it is a rise and a fill to the left a fall. A longer, brighter fill is a larger change, in five steps up to 2.75 and over. Every chip prints its figure and sign. A dash is a month with no figure.

What do the lines of this page measure?

The Copom, the monetary policy committee of the Banco Central do Brasil, sets the target for the Selic, the rate on overnight loans between Brazilian banks against federal government bonds. The Selic rate is the rate those loans actually paid, which the bank reports for each day. The CDI (Certificado de Depósito Interbancário) rate is the average rate of overnight loans between banks that are not secured by government bonds.

What this number cannot tell you

  • The bank reports the Selic target in percent a year and the Selic rate and the CDI rate for one day. The Selic rate here is the bank's own series of the daily rate expressed for a year of 252 business days. The CDI rate here is ours: the bank's rate for one day, compounded for 252 business days: one plus the daily rate (as a fraction of 1), raised to the power 252, minus one, shown in percent and held to six places.
  • A month's value is the value of the last day of the month that has one, and a month shows only after the bank has published a day of the month after it. The target begins on 5 March 1999, the Selic rate on 4 June 1986 and the CDI rate on 6 March 1986.
  • The changes and the ranks are ours, worked out from the values the bank publishes; a change is in percentage points. The data are offered under the Open Database License, as the bank offers them.
