Understanding the deposits at commercial banks
Where it stands today
The deposits at commercial banks was $19,636.7 billion in September 2026.
What does the deposits at commercial banks measure?
Deposits are the money that people, companies and governments hold in accounts at commercial banks, such as checking, savings and time accounts. A deposit is a liability of the bank to the depositor, so the deposits are the largest line on the liabilities side of the banks' balance sheet. The Federal Reserve Board's H.8 release estimates them each week for all commercial banks in the United States together.

Each value is the average of the Board's weekly levels, as of each Wednesday, over the month, seasonally adjusted. The balance sheet page lists the deposits beside the other liabilities and the assets, and shows the large time deposits and all other deposits apart.
What 500metrics adds: the change over a year, the last month in which the value was higher and lower, a rank among the lines of the balance sheet page by that change, and the history in one chart and one file.

What this number cannot tell you
- The value is the Board's estimate. It rests on a weekly report from a panel of about 850 banks, which hold around 90 percent of commercial bank assets, and on the quarterly reports that all banks file. The Board revises past weeks and months, and the seasonal adjustment, in later releases; this page always shows the newest release.
- The value counts the deposits on the books of commercial banks, insured or not, at their domestic offices and at the US offices of foreign-related institutions. Foreign offices, banks in US territories, thrifts, savings institutions and credit unions are not in it.
- The level is not adjusted for breaks. When a bank is bought, changes group or is reclassified, the level can jump without any new deposit being made, and the change over a year includes the jump.
- The change over a year is ours, worked out from the Board's values; it is in percent.
