What this number cannot tell you
- EIA asks gas stations for their price on Monday of each week. This page shows the simple average of the weekly prices of each calendar month, as EIA works out its own monthly averages. A month counts once it has ended, and only when every Monday of it has a price, so the newest month is the last full month and a month with a week missing shows as a gap in the chart.
- EIA changed the way it estimates the weekly gasoline price in May 2018, and the price for the week of the change is not directly comparable with the week before.
- Prices differ by state, by city and by station; this page shows the average of EIA's sample for the whole United States. It is a price at the pump, not the price of crude oil or of gasoline on any market.
- The averages, the changes, the ranks and the highest and lowest values are ours, worked out from the weekly prices EIA publishes; a change is in percent.
