The yield is the Ministry of Finance's for the 10-year Japanese government bond, which the Ministry works out as if the bond always had exactly ten years left to run, from the reference prices that the Japan Securities Dealers Association publishes. The Ministry publishes no series of Japan's government debt or deficit that this site can use, so this page has the yield alone.

What 500metrics adds: the change over a year and over five years of every figure, the highest and lowest value since our record begins, the last time a figure was higher and lower, the last ten years of the bond yield as small charts.

What this number cannot tell you

  • The bond yield is in percent a year and is a figure for a month.
  • A change is the difference between two values, in percentage points, and is ours; it is shown for a year and for five years back, and is blank where the series does not reach that far.
  • The Ministry publishes a yield for each business day, and the page shows the mean of the days of each month that has ended. The Ministry's yields are calculated from the Association's reference prices; this site shows the yields and not those prices.
  • The yield is in percent a year, with interest counted twice a year, for a bond that always has exactly ten years left to run. It is not the yield of one real bond. Japan's debt and deficit are not shown because the Ministry gives them only in documents this site does not read.
  • The monthly means, the changes and the highest and lowest values are ours, worked out from the values the Ministry publishes.
