How is this chart made?
The Treasury sells its marketable debt as bills (a year or less), notes (two to ten years), bonds (twenty and thirty years), inflation-protected securities (TIPS, whose principal rises with consumer prices) and floating rate notes (whose interest rate is reset every week). Marketable securities trade among investors.

Nonmarketable debt cannot be traded. Government Account Series are held by federal trust funds and other government accounts, savings securities are sold to the public, and state and local government series are issued to those governments. Other holds the Federal Financing Bank's securities and the smaller nonmarketable series.
The amounts are the Treasury's, as its statement prints them, in millions of dollars. Each share is the amount of one kind divided by the sum of all kinds, worked out by 500metrics.

What do the figures leave out, and what are their dates?Limits and dates
What this number cannot tell you
- The whole is total public debt outstanding: debt held by the public and the debt the government owes its own accounts (Government Account Series) are both counted.
- Inflation-indexed notes and bonds, the names the statement used until May 2004, are counted with TIPS. Domestic, foreign and R.E.A. series, the Hope Bonds, the Depositary Compensation Securities and the Federal Financing Bank are in Other.
- A share is printed to one decimal, so a kind under 0.05 percent of the whole shows as 0.0%.
- A month whose kinds do not add up to the statement's own total is left out.
