What do these figures leave out, and how are they cited?Limits, dates and how to cite
What this number cannot tell you
- Figures are as the company filed them, in dollars. A year the company restated shows the restated figure.
- A balance (total assets, equity, cash, long-term debt) is shown under a year only when the SEC data dates it within ten days of the fiscal year end. Shares outstanding and public float are the figures on the cover page of the annual report, shown only on the dates a cover gives them: shares up to ninety days after the year end, public float from ninety to two hundred and sixty days before it (the end of the second fiscal quarter). A figure of a period (profit, cash from operations, capital spending, research spending, income tax paid, buybacks, dividends) is shown under a year only when the SEC data ends that period within sixty days of the fiscal year end.
- A dash is a gap. Either the company did not report that figure for that year, the figure failed one of our checks and is not shown, or the SEC data holds it for another date or period than the year asks for. The dash says which when it is pointed at, and the figures held back or held for another date or period are listed under the table.
- The SEC labels its annual figures by calendar year, so a fifty-two or fifty-three week year that ends in late June can share its label with its neighbour, and a fiscal year can be missing from the table. No comparison is made across such a gap: a record, a highest since or a change from the year before is not said between two years whose ends are more than four hundred days apart.
- Revenue is the company's total revenue as it files it. A bank or lender that files no other revenue line can show its interest income.
- A company that files together with a parent or a subsidiary shows only its own figures, so the same business can have two pages.
- Public float is the figure the company states on its cover page for the shares held by outside investors. It is the company's statement, not a price set on an exchange.
